Why use a tacky over grip in tennis?
While there is nothing wrong with continuing to play with your racquet’s original factory grip, it’s not necessarily going to be the optimum choice!
Grips can be dry or tacky. The best tacky over grip for tennis is going to be the stickiest grip, while the dry grip will be slightly slick.
The reason tennis player’s use over grip is because the original stock grips on a racquet are very hard and thin.
They can wear down easily and become costly to replace.
Using an over grip preserves the original grip and is much more cost effective than having to replace it altogether.
Tennis grip vs. Tennis over grip
Grips are either replacement grips or over grips.
- A replacement grip can be applied directly onto the handle of a racquet. It has a sticky backing and can offer a reasonable amount of cushioning.
- An over grip on the other hand, does not have a sticky backing and is typically much thinner.
Take a look at this short video on how to replace your tennis over grip.

When selecting the right grip for your game, it’s important to consider grip sizing.
Proper grip sizing is very important. To measure your grip you will need a measuring tape.
Place your fingers extended out and then turn your palm up.
With the tape measure, take a measurement from the very end of your ring finger down to the bottom crease in your palm (usually adjacent to where your thumb attaches to your palm).
This will be the size grip you need to look for. It will usually fall between 3 & 5/8 inches and 4 ¾ inches.
It is best to get a grip size one size smaller than your measurement.
This will allow for the extra grip tape of an over grip without making the grip too big for your hand.
