Squash is a racquet and ball sport played in a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball. 

The players alternate in striking the ball with their racquets onto the playing surface of the four walls of the court. 

The objective of the game is to hit the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return.

So what’s the best squash ball for beginners?

Squash ball differences

Squash rules dictate that the ball will be considered out of play when:

  • It hits the floor before it hits the front wall on a serve.
  • It hits the floor before it hits the front wall on a return.  
  • It bounces on the way back from the front wall before a return.

Squash balls for seniors and youth

The best way to warm up a squash ball is by repeatedly hitting it straight down the line up on the front wall. Volleying works well for this as well.

Most common Squash balls

The four most common kinds of squash balls are red, blue, single yellow and double yellow. When starting out as a new player the blue or red balls are the best. 

However, as we mentioned earlier, if the new player is young, there are mini squash balls which are more preferable for young players’ still developing hand-eye coordination. 

Slow reaction times can halt progress in these cases so the min-squash orange ball is recommended. 

Larger Squash Balls

Some manufactures also offer slightly larger balls for beginner players. An intro ball is something we will explore when searching for a good beginner ball for Squash due to its 12% larger size. 

This size is larger than the standard size and makes the ball slower which is ideal for beginners.

Playing as a beginner

Unless you are a good established player, it is best to play with a blue or red ball while you improve. More advanced balls require long rallies and regular hard-hitting in order to stay sufficiently warm. 

As you get better at squash, you will move on to single yellow dot balls. Playing with a more difficult ball too soon can hurt, not help, your performance and progress. 

If you are playing against a player who is at a lower level than you, play with a ball that is appropriate for their skill level. 

Temperature of the court and the ball 

The temperature of the court should also be taken into account since some courts are colder than others. You will find it easier to play with bouncier balls in this instance.  

In the winter on colder courts even advanced players use single dot balls. Double dot balls will not bounce enough in these conditions. 

Altitude and Squash ball choice

The altitude of a court should also influence your ball choice. In high altitude areas with lower air pressure, it is necessary to find a ball with even less bounce. 

A high altitude ‘orange dot’ ball is often used in places such as Mexico City and Johannesburg while a ‘green dot’ is commonly used in North America. 

Using different Squash balls for training 

Advanced players sometimes have an ego about their squash balls. However, using different balls is important in training. 

For a volley drill, a much bouncier single dot ball to test an advanced player’s reactions is great because the ball will rebound off the front wall faster. 

When hitting length or short shots, ball control comes into play when using a single dot or red dot ball. 

If a player can still hit dying lengths (length shots which don’t come out of the back corners) with a single or red dot ball, then the training exercise will be worth it.  

Finishing rallies and hitting better drop shots are also skills to train for with a bouncier ball. Anyone can learn to hit a drop shot with a medium warm double dot ball.

Hitting a winning shot with a red dot ball is much more challenging! Plan to practice with these balls if you are an advanced player.
